Start with the large pattern

Use your practice area or a spare sheet to try the method before working on a favourite illustration.

01. Choose a reference approach

For a historical interpretation use a dated source matching the exact aircraft variant and theatre. A restored aircraft is not always evidence of its wartime paint.

02. Block in the main areas lightly

Establish the main upper and lower colours before adding smaller patches. Keep the boundaries gentle until the overall pattern works.

03. Build the pattern

Add mottling or soft edges a little at a time. Let the drawing remain legible through the colours.

04. Add wear sparingly

A few small changes of tone can suggest use. Stop before weathering overwhelms the aircraft’s shape.
