Layering & blending
Build richer colour one gentle layer at a time.
Build the colour gradually
Use your practice area or a spare sheet to try the method before working on a favourite illustration.
01. Lay down a light foundation
Hold the pencil comfortably and make a gentle first pass. Let some of the white paper remain visible between the marks.
02. Change direction
Add a second light layer with the strokes running in a slightly different direction. This helps soften visible bands without heavy pressure.
03. Bring in a neighbouring shade
Try a slightly darker or warmer colour where you want depth. Start in a small area and work outwards.
04. Save pressure for later
Heavier pressure can flatten the paper surface. Keep room for further layers until you are happy with the colour.
Pressing harder does not always make a better blend. Try another light layer before committing to a heavy finish.
Try it on a favourite.
Choose an illustration from the book collections and begin with a small area.
