Designer Phil Irving describes the Series B Black Shadow’s main castings as stove-enamelled black. Pair this deep black with polished metal highlights. Gold tank lining is documented on the museum’s later Series C example.

The black engine finish is supported by the designer's account. The later museum example supports finish relationships rather than every 1948 trim detail.
In the photographs
The photographs show black tanks and engines with bright metal and gold lining. The road-bike views are of a later Series C; the 1948 special carries competition equipment and decorative tank graphics. Their shared black theme agrees with the Black Shadow's documented finish, but the special's artwork and the later bike's trim do not establish standard 1948 details.

In the coloured example
The example uses black and gold with silver highlights. Its dark mudguards are an artistic departure from the polished-alloy mudguard reference. Follow the photographs for reflected metal tones while keeping the Series B and Series C equipment differences in mind.

Work between the corrected V-twin fins with a sharp grey pencil.
Use pale silver strokes along the exhaust curve.
